Chris Clarida, 27, of Moravian Falls led out the pack. Chris won a gold medal and two silver medals in cycling events at the 2003 Special Olympics World Games in Dublin, Ireland. Proceeds from the inaugural Rollin' Round the River Ride in 2002 helped fuel Chris's Olympic dreams.
"The Rollin' Round the River Ride drew a diverse crowd, including a sizeable number of older entrants," said ride director Tim Murphy. 75-year-old Jim Martin of Wilkesboro, the event's oldest rider, finished on a bike with a locked rear derailleur that limited him to just two gear selections. (Some of the ride's other entrants had up to 30 gear choices!)
Eight-year-old Alexander McCall of Statesville, who rode the event with his dad Duncan, was the youngest rider ever to finish the Rollin' Round the River Ride under his own power.
A big pack of area riders finished fast, while others took their time, enjoying the attractions at two living history sites, Whippoorwill Academy and Village in Ferguson and Fort Defiance in Patterson.
Lisa Boyles, who just moved to Wilkesboro from Indianapolis, felt lucky just to get on the road. She missed the mass start when her bike got stuck in her subcompact car and she couldn't get it out. With some help from a volunteer, she was able to extricate the rig and get a lift up the road to catch up with some of the other riders.
Deep Gap rider Bridgette McLean got a big surprise at the Rollin' Round the River Ride: a check for bike equipment. The Watauga High School sophomore needed pedals and shoes for her new road bike. BMCC's Richard Fink spearheaded a drive to collect funds to help Bridgette.
Despite some gray clouds, most riders finished the event without getting wet. "The wet weather Friday probably held down participation a bit," Murphy said. Ridership was down 13% from 2005's record numbers.
Two riders did not finish. They crossed wheels avoiding a pothole in Caldwell County. One rider received minor injuries in the tangle.
A small army of volunteers pitched in to stage the event.
"I can't say enough good things about our volunteers from Wilkes County Special Olympics and BMCC," Murphy said. "They really roll out the welcome mat for our riders."
